Scottish & Newcastle is to sponsor the Scottish Amateur Cup, the largest football competition and team sports event in Scotland, and the Scottish Amateur Sunday Trophy for the Scottish Amateur Football Association’s centenary season. Founded in 1909, the Scottish Amateur Football Association (SAFA) was established by Queen’s Park FC, Glasgow & District FP League and the Schools Association to develop and foster the game of football as played by amateurs in both urban and rural communities throughout Scotland. The SAFA now consists of 62 Associations and Leagues; 2500 Clubs and over 60,000 players competing regularly each week across the country. League clubs represent communities spanning the length and breadth of Scotland and it is estimated that up to 250,000 supporters attend games over the course of a season. Scottish & Newcastle wishes to demonstrate its support for grassroots football with the announcement it is to sponsor the new Fosters Centenary Scottish Amateur Cup and the Fosters Scottish Amateur Sunday Trophy over the 2008/09 and 2009/2010 seasons. Each season, over 1000 teams from across Scotland compete for the two trophies culminating in the Cup Finals which will be played at Scotland’s National Stadium, Hampden Park and another venue still to be confirmed. Ian Norman, managing director of Scottish & Newcastle UK North commented: “Foster’s has built a strong following across Scotland and the brand has established itself as an enthusiastic supporter of football. This latest sponsorship deal provides us with a platform to take the brand to thousands of footballers who participate in competitive games every week. The strength of our national sport extends beyond the professional leagues and relies on the passion and enthusiasm of amateur players, club officials and supporters.”
